Hunewill Ranch is the oldest working guest ranch in California and one of the oldest continuously owned family ranches in the American West. 2011 marks our 150th year as a cattle ranch and our 80th year as a guest ranch. The fourth, fifth and sixth generations of our family still run cattle in the meadows of Bridgeport Valley. Tucked under the Sawtooth Range that forms the Northeastern boundary of Yosemite National Park, the valley has been home to Hunewill Ranch since our great-great grandfather Napoleon Bonaparte Hunewill first grazed his oxen on the lush grass of this jewel of the Sierra Nevada. He and his wife, Esther, provided first lumber, then beef, for the mining boomtowns of Bodie and Aurora.

150 years later, the descendants of those pioneers welcome guests to share in the joys of ranch life – to dine in Napoleon and Esther’s stately Victorian ranch house, to herd cattle, to lope across thousands of acres of meadows, and to explore the high country of the Eastern Sierra as it was meant to be seen – horseback. From swimming in the creek, cookouts, square dancing, hayrides, or private riding lessons, Hunewill Ranch has something for all. Bridgeport is also home to blue-ribbon trout streams and lakes that draw anglers from across the country. Of course the most popular of our stays is the seven-night vacation but, our family has also pioneered in the area of flexible stays and themed weeks, half-weeks and long weekends structured around specific activities (cattle work, fall color rides, high-country cattle gathers, and much more). These include non-horseback retreats, corporate conferences, and diverse specialty groups from quilters to architects. Hunewill Ranch stays are all-inclusive, so check out our website, find a package that suits your needs, and join us for the ranch vacation of a lifetime.
